My move to Canada and subsequent birth of my daughter kind of put my gaming on hold, but now I’m back in a regular group and I’m looking to run a WatchTower game with them. This will be my first time doing a bunch of things:
- Running a supers game
- Running Marvel system
- Running WatchTower
- Running a game for this group
I’m using Marvel for the main reason as we used it in the past: it’s easy to pick up 🙂 It’s been ages since I’ve run anything: with the exception of a brief (and bland) Pendragon scenario in 2007, the last thing I ran was some D&D in 2004 when I was thinking of writing for WotC. Unlike Matt, I don’t have the plug-n-play-GM gene, so I’m intending to put a bunch of prep work into this.
Now all I need to do is switch to polyphasic sleep so I get an extra three or four hours in my day.
I’d love to play in a supers game. The last I did was a GURPS Supers game, and that system is far too crunchy to really let the heroes shine in 4 colors.
If you’re looking for a system with a tick more balance than marvel, I’d point to Champions/HERO System. I’ve never played it with a large group, but I have generated a number of villains, and the point buy system works well there.
I’m not worried about balance, to be honest. X-Men was a great comic to read, even though the protagonists were not balanced with each other. In fact, probably _because_ they weren’t.
Champions and GURPS are much the same to me. Points points points. And GURPS is more crunchy than HERO? Come on! You’re ‘avin’ a laff!
I’d go for Marvel any day – it;s not about the balance, it’s about the fun.
FASERIP is a fun engine, and far less arcane than (beloved) Villains and Vigilantes 2e.
–Have fun! 🙂
First character generated last night. Inspires me to write another post.
I’ve tried a few systems and settled on either FASERIP (due to familiarity) and HUMANYDYNE (due to novelty).
Congrats on the birth of your daughter Aidan!
Where have you moved to in Canada
Saskatchewan – bang in the middle.
Now have half the group generated, but it will probably be about a month before we finish up our current game and get started on the WatchTower.
You’ll probably be having a winter as bad as or worse than I do in Japan!
It gets down below -40 in the worst weeks. -20 to -30 is normal for Jan-Feb. Not much snow, but what we get stays for 5 months 🙂
Wow! Worse than us! We get down to about -10 some night – but get a shitload of snow that stays for 4 months. The humidity is still a kicker though – drains heat away fast in winter and smothers you in summer!
What brought you to SK? (Did I get that right?)
Job opportunity brought us here, but the quality of life is why we’ve stayed. Won’t be moving any time soon.
The cold here is very dry so to me it doesn’t feel as cold as, say, Belfast in the winter with the rain being blown in your face by the wind.
